Peak Process
How does EEG NeuroFeedBack work?
NeuroFeedBack (NFB) is conditioning on EEG parameters. The training reinforces specific EEG frequencies and inhibits others. The training of the brainwaves form the balance needed for the individual’s ideal outcome.
We begin each session discussing any impact previous sessions have had upon sleep, focus and any progress made. Then depending upon the protocol chosen, the selection of the ideal points on the head are determined for the electrodes for either SMR or Alpha-Theta training. With SMR, the client sits in front of a computer screen while the electrodes sense and feedback brainwave activity into a separate computer which the therapist monitors and adjusts as necessary. At the same time the client is receiving visual and audio feedback in the form of a video game. The feedback gives positive reinforcement or rewards while training the client to relax, focus & concentrate, which through repetition decreases fidgeting and impulsive distraction to tasks. The reward in Alpha-Theta is a certain sound that is heard, like the sound of a gong.
Training the brain is similar to exercising and developing muscle. EEG neuro-feedback instruments measure and process electrical signals from the brain, whilst feeding into the brain area a selected protocol for change. It comes back to the client via a video display game if doing SMR, or as a sound if doing Alpha-Theta training. The difference between SMR is that is an eyes open process, viewing a game screen, while Alpha-Theta is eyes closed and listening to sounds. The client begins to enjoy viewing or hearing the results, while their ability to manage their focus outside the training in their daily lives.. Neuro-feedback lets participants know whether they are maintaining optimal brain wave states during these activities. It's the brain's innate ability to shift focus and awareness. These skills are practiced until it becomes automatic (unconscious). In this process, students develop learning strategies through calm focusing techniques.
How does hypnosis factor into this process?
While the Neuro-Feedback is done on a physiological level, it is backed up in the subconscious with hypnosis. Deposits of suggestions are placed for the desired behavioral change in the subscious, utilizing specific language that oftentimes are the client's own words. When the subconscious mind hears the reflection of it's own wording it grasps the desired change quickly making the "Peak Process" unique and quantum to each person. Hypnosis is a powerful tool in and of itself, but when paired with a matching physiological input of NFB change takes place quickly and permanently. An example would be if a client is being seen for academic help, upon completing NFB portion, the client is then taken into a state of hypnosis via guided imagery and in that deep state of relaxation, specific suggestions are placed into the subconsious for things like memory or recall. Often the visualization of placing the person in the classroom in a totally calm focused state moving through an exam free of anxiety and recalling answers promptly is done. Then, by listening to that personal hypnosis session at bedtime for 3 weeks the subscious mind makes this suggestion a reality in the wakeful/conscious state. Repetition is key with both hypnosis and NFB. The brain's biggest response for automatic behavior change IS REPETITION!
What makes this approach better than traditional therapy?
By balancing the brainwaves with NFB the physiological foundation is laid. Through hypnosis or guided imagery the next step is to work with the powerful subconscious mind placing images of success and ideal outcome which paves the way for a holistic completion of the treatment. These behaviors now become automatic. Sometimes dietary suggestions or activity suggestions are given as well to complete this Holistic approach. Bases are covered more thoroughly with this approach as compared to traditional "Talk Therapy".
How can this approach work for my ability as an athlete or a student?
Placing the ability to
focus calmly at a time of heightened stress during a competition, exam time, or when any performance has not been optimum, a solid recovery is made and success follows. As test anxiety subsides, focus and recall is enhanced to their personal best for grades, or really whatever area is desired for an ultimate outcome. For some, it is specifically needed after a substandard start so one can finish with excellence by being able to focus clearly getting through negativite thoughts that may pop up. Everyone has their own specific that is addressed and then changed to get there.
